ACCORD new figures show upward trend in couples getting married

ACCORD launches new Facebook page for couples

Love, not money, key to happiness on Saint Valentine’s Day and everyday

Audio reflections on love and marriage available to parishes and for broadcast on

ACCORD, the Catholic marriage care service, has announced a 6% increase in the number of couples booking their marriage preparation courses online for the first six weeks in 2011. In 2010 the online bookings figure was 1183 compared to 1255 for the same period in 2011.

This upward trend tells us that in 2011 commitment to marriage is more popular than ever. Couples - even in the face of these economic uncertainty times - continue to make this most important of life decisions.

Saint Valentine and Dublin

Relics of Saint Valentine are interred in the Carmelite Church in Whitefriar Street, Dublin. Saint Valentine, a priest in ancient Rome, is regarded as the patron saint of couples in love, preparing for marriage and of married life. Saint Valentine was martyred on 14 February 250 AD. Pagan ritual associated 14 February with love and after his death this date became associated with St Valentine. In 1836 relics that were exhumed from the catacombs of Saint Hippolytus on the Via Tiburtina, then near Rome, were identified with Saint Valentine. These relics were placed in a casket, donated by Pope Gregory XVI, and transported to the Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin.

Message of Pope Benedict XVI for the Nineteenth World Day of the Sick, 11 February 2011

"By His wounds you have been healed" (1 Pt 2:24)

The full text of the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, message for the 19th World Day of the Sick can be found on:

The celebration of the World Day of the Sick was an initiative of Pope John Paul II, for those who are sick. The World Day of the Sick message is also addressed to those who care for the sick who are important witnesses to the gospel. Each year on the Feast of Our Lady Our Lourdes (11 February), a special Papal message is issued to the faithful which focuses on a particular theme. The theme for 2011 is "By His wounds you have been healed" (1 Pt 2:24).

Joint statement from Bishop John Buckley and Bishop Noel Treanor following plane crash in Cork Airport

Bishop John Buckley, Bishop of Cork and Ross and Bishop Noel Treanor, Bishop of Down and Connor, have called for prayers for those who were killed and injured in the plane crash at Cork airport this morning:

"We express our deepest sympathies to the families of those who have lost their lives following the accident on the Belfast - Cork flight which crashed in Cork airport this morning. Our hearts also go out to those who have been injured and to all who are affected by this terrible tragedy.

"The suddenness and scale of this loss of life is shocking. We ask people of faith, North and South, to pray for those who have died and for their loved ones. We will be offering Mass and our prayers for the deceased, the injured and their families. We also commend the emergency services for their rapid response and care at this difficult time."

Information Meeting for New Samaritan Volunteers‏

The Samaritans are seeking your support in advance of our volunteer recruitment drive. As you are aware, Samaritan volunteers are available 24 hours a day to provide confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair including those which may lead to suicide.

The Samaritans vision is for a society in which:

fewer people die by suicide;

people are able to explore their feelings;

people are able to acknowledge and respect the feelings of others.

To do this we rely on members of the public to volunteer their time. We believe that about a third of our current volunteers came to us after reading an announcement in their parish newsletter. I would therefore be grateful for any assistance you may give in promoting our two Information Meetings taking place on: Tuesday, 22nd February at 7.30 p.m. in the Oranmore Lodge Hotel, Oranmore and on Tuesday, 1st March at 7.30 p.m. in the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill.
