PENTECOST SUNDAY, MAY 23RD 2010.

“ The Church was made manifest to the world on the day of Pentecost by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Spirit ushers in a new era in the dispensation of the mystery- the age of the Church, during which Christ manifests, makes present and communicates his work of salvation through the liturgy of his church ‘until he comes’ ”

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1076)

Reflection adapted from Sunday thoughts.com, copyright, Fr. Martin Tierney, who died recently.

"You asked for my hands

That you might use them for your purpose.

I gave them for a moment, then withdrew them For the work was hard.

You asked for my eyes

To see the pain of poverty.

I closed them for I did not want to see. "

People who are to be sent out need someone to send them; they need a message to take; they need a power and an authority to back their message; they need someone to whom they may turn when they are in doubt and in difficulty. Without Jesus, the Church has no message, no power, no support. As baptised people we have a mandate to make Jesus known and loved.

Statement by Cardinal Seán Brady last Monday, May 17th, on the publication today of the

Annual Report of the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland.

I welcome the publication today of the Second Annual Report of the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland (NBSCCCI). I want to thank the members of the Board and the National Office of the NBSCCCI for their outstanding dedication, professionalism and commitment in supporting the sincere desire of Bishops and leaders of Religious Congregations to become exemplars of best practice in safeguarding children. I also want to thank them for holding us to account and for pointing out frankly and constructively those areas of policy, practice or attitude which require corrective action or further development. This has been a year of extraordinary challenge for the NBSCCCI with the publication of the Ryan Report and Murphy Report which made exceptional demands on the members and staff of the Board and the National Office.

I hope today’s Report will help to reassure everyone that while important challenges remain, the Catholic Church in Ireland has come a long way in addressing the failings of the past. I welcome in particular the Report’s two clear conclusions: "Firstly, that children should be safer today within the Church than they once were. Secondly, those that seek to harm children should feel much less secure."

I also welcome the news that 2,356 individuals have been trained and are now acting as child safeguarding representatives in Parishes across the country, with coverage of all Parishes to be achieved in the coming months. This represents an extraordinary achievement by any standard and is a remarkable example of lay participation in the life and ministry of the Church. I want to thank all those who give of their time, talent and expertise in safeguarding children. Building whole communities that actively keep children safe, together with effective structures of accountability and transparency, is the key to the future of child safeguarding within the Church and, indeed, within society as a whole. Each one of us has to take responsibility for keeping children safe and for addressing the attitudes and practices which had such tragic consequences for so many children in the past.

There is no room for complacency. The tragic experience of the past reminds us that constant vigilance is needed as well as full adherence to robust, comprehensive and ongoing systems of accountability. As Pope Benedict XVI said to the Bishops in his Pastoral Letter to the Catholics of Ireland, "Only decisive action carried out with complete honesty and transparency will restore the respect and good will of the Irish people towards the Church to which we have consecrated our lives. This must arise, first and foremost, from your own self-examination, inner purification and spiritual renewal."

The Sacred Heart Church is fully compliant with Child Protection Procedures and we have trained safeguarding representatives.

World Communications Day 2010

This Sunday, 16 May, is the 44th World Communications Day and the theme of Pope Benedict XVI's message for 2010 is "The priest and pastoral ministry in a digital world: new media at the service of the Word."
The theme of this year’s message coincides with the Church’s universal celebration of the Year for Priests. The message focuses attention on the important pastoral area of digital communications in which Pope Benedict says: “priests can discover new possibilities for carrying out their ministry to and for the Word of God”.

The full text of the Pope’s message for World Communications Day is available as part of a special feature on

http://www.catholicbishops.ie./

The web feature also includes:

Video introduction and reflection on the Pope's message by Bishop John McAreavey, Co-Chair of the Bishops' Council for Communications;

Articles on Church communications from the May issue of Intercom magazine;

Details of previous World Communications Day themes.

Statement of the Irish Bishops for the occasion of the National Famine Commemoration Day.

http://www.catholicbishops.ie/

Sunday 16th May 2010 - You will be my Witnesses (Acts 1:8).

As the country holds the second National Famine Commemoration Day, we are confronted by the shocking reality that more than one billion people on the planet are victims of hunger. Remembering the millions who died or were forced to emigrate at the time of the Irish Famine brings to mind that almost one in six of the world’s people does not have enough food to eat today. On this Ascension Day we hear the words of Jesus: “You will be my witnesses… to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). As witnesses to Christ’s love we are challenged to ‘feed the hungry’ and to give concrete expression to Christ’s deep concern for the poor.

In his recent encyclical, Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI pointed out that the elimination of world hunger has become a requirement for safeguarding the peace and stability of the planet. It is necessary, wrote the Holy Father, ‘to cultivate a public conscience that considers food and access to water as universal rights of all human beings, without distinction or discrimination’.

In September 2010 world leaders will gather at the United Nations in New York to assess progress in implementing the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Included in the first of these is an international determination to reduce by half the number of people living in hunger by the year 2015. Agencies like Trócaire are actively engaged in the MDG process. The Irish government made a special commitment to pursue this target particularly in the light of our national experience of famine. As we urge other developed countries to meet their commitments on development aid, fair trade and the relief of debt, we too must fulfil our responsibilities in these areas. We owe it to those who suffered at the time of the Irish Famine to stand in solidarity with the hungry of today.

Hundreds to Take to the Streets of Galway for Console Suicide Memorial Walk.

Console is calling on families, friends, work colleagues to take to the streets of Galway for the 2010 Console Memorial Walk in aid of the suicide bereaved.

The charity is hoping that people from every corner of Galway will seize the opportunity to take part in the 6.5 kilometre challenge and help raise funds for families whose lives have been torn apart as a result of the loss of a loved one to suicide.

The Walk entitled “Walking in Memory of Our Loved Ones” takes place on Sunday 16th May at 2.30 pm against the backdrop of Galway Bay. The starting point is at the Claddagh Hall and the route leads right up to Blackrock and back around to the Claddagh Hall, where weary walkers can enjoy celebratory refreshments. We are badly in need of funding and this is YOUR opportunity to help keep the counselling service operating to its full potential. For sponsorship pack or indeed to make a donation please phone

Lough Derg offers the gift of hope for 2010.

Saturday 1 May sees the start of the ‘One Day Retreats’ at the Lough Derg pilgrimage site in Co Donegal. Lough Derg offers an exciting and varied programme of events for its 2010 season. As in previous years one day retreats are complemented by Three Day Pilgrimages, Quiet Days, Day for Families along with Confirmation and School Retreats and the “Life’s Journey” Series of Workshops.
Welcoming the opening of the 2010 Lough Derg season Bishop Joseph Duffy, Bishop of Clogher, said “Lough Derg is a special place of peace and personal challenge, renowned in Irish Christian tradition since the time of St Patrick. In former times the emphasis of the Lough Derg pilgrimage was more on physical penance and hardship. Today pilgrims see it as a grace-filled opportunity away from the stress and busyness of modern life.”

A special feature on Lough Derg is now available on

http://www.catholicbishops.ie/

including:

• A video interview with Bishop Joseph Duffy, Bishop of Clogher, about the significance of Lough Derg for Christians throughout history, and its enduring appeal to pilgrims today

• Historical information about Lough Derg

• Details of the pilgrimage

• A full programme of events at Lough Derg for the 2010 season

Bishop Duffy continued “Lough Derg identifies itself with the universal mission of the Church in our divided society, while remaining very much part of our society. The Lough Derg experience exemplifies the healing and liberating work of the Church which we all agree is very much needed at the present time. As a pilgrimage Lough Derg reminds us that we are all members of a community, searching for peace and reconciliation in our lives.”
