Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins on the 18th

As part of the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity here in Ireland, a Service of Healing and Hope' will take place in Galway's St. Nicholas ‘Collegiate Church on Wednesday, January 19th at 8pm. Everybody is welcome to this ecumenical and inclusive liturgy, especially all who seek relief from mental and physical ailments and illness themselves or who wish to pray for healing and recovery for their loved-ones who may be unwell. The leaders of the major Christian denominations in Galway will participate and a brief address will be given by Archdeacon Gary Hastings, Rector of St Nicholas.

Fraud Alert message from Trócaire

In recent times Trócaire has ‘handled a further five cases of letters to Irish clergy for different causes and all of them have turned out to be scams. In the recent cases these scams have been getting better with accompanying forged letters from the local parish priest (even non-existent parishes) and forged letters on headed paper from the local bishop.’

‘Most of these seem to be coming from one area called Lugazi near Kampala.’ Trócaire’s representative in Kampala has discussed it with the Bishop there and he is very aware that an organised group is well set up, is targeting lists of clergy and religious, and getting better and more professional at it. There are also reports that a recent letter campaign has been targeting German clergy from the same area in Uganda.

Trócaire wishes to highlight the work it does with the local church and Irish missionaries. It also wishes to make it known that if priests want to support Uganda, Trócaire can guarantee any donation it receives will go to the purpose for which it was intended.
