Happy Epiphany everyone! Nollaig na mBan faoi mhaise dhaoibh!

The rest of the Christian world might call it the Epiphany – “l’Épiphanie” or “le Jour des Rois” in France. But in Ireland we call the sixth of January “Little Christmas”, or “Nollaig Bheag” in Irish.

That’s the traditional end of the Christmas season, the 12th day of Christmas, the last day of the school holidays, and the arrival of the Three Kings to the Baby in the Manger.

In Ireland, Little Christmas is also called “Women’s Christmas”, or “Nollaig na mBan”. It’s even known as “Women’s Little Christmas” around Cork and Kerry.

It’s a sort of precursor to Mother’s Day and Equal Pay, the day when the man of the house would do all the household chores, while Herself would be queen for a day – and would hit town to celebrate with her sisters / mothers / aunts / friends. Or she’d make “little dainties”.
