'Witness Awakens Vocations' theme for Vocations Sunday 2010.

This Sunday, 25 April, is Vocations Sunday or Good Shepherd Sunday. Vocations Sunday is the day on which the Church prays for and encourages vocations.

The theme of this year's Vocation's Sunday message from Pope Benedict XVI is 'Witness Awakens Vocations'. Pope Benedict chose this theme to complement this year, the Year for Priests, which he inaugurated on 16 June last. In his Vocations Sunday message Pope Benedict prays: “May this World Day once again offer many young people a precious opportunity to reflect on their own vocation and to be faithful to it in simplicity, trust and complete openness. May the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, watch over each tiny seed of a vocation in the hearts of those whom the Lord calls to follow him more closely, may she help it to grow into a mature tree, bearing much good fruit for the Church and for all humanity.”

The full text of the Pope’s message for Vocations Sunday is available as part of a special feature on

http://www.catholicbishops.ie./

The web feature includes:

Pope Paul VI instituted the World Day of Prayer for Vocations (4th Sunday of Easter) on 11 April 1964: “O Jesus, divine Shepherd of the spirit, you have called the Apostles in order to make them fishermen of men, you still attract to you burning spirits and generous young people, in order to render them your followers and ministers to us” (Pope Paul VI launching the 1st Word Day of Prayer for Vocations).

Vocations Sunday is known as Good Shepherd Sunday and is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Easter.

Visit of the Relics of St John Vianney to Ireland from 25 to 29 April.
As part of the Year for Priests, the Bishops of Ireland have arranged for a visit of the relics of St John Vianney, Patron Saint of Parish Priests, from Sunday 25 to Thursday 29 April 2010. The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has expressed his hope that the Year for Priests will support the faithfulness and holiness of priests, and deepen their commitment to "interior renewal for the sake of a more forceful and incisive witness to the Gospel in today’s world". The Year for Priests is also an opportunity for the whole Church to seek a holier and renewed priesthood.
Each day of this special four-day visit of the relics will have a different theme. These key themes are central to both the life and mission of St John Vianney and this Year for Priests. The faithful are invited to pray at the relics in the following churches based in each of the four ecclesiastical provinces of Ireland:

Cork - Sunday, 25 April in St Francis Church, Liberty Street on the theme 'Vocations to the Priesthood'

Dublin - Monday, 26 April Church of St John Vianney in Ardlea, on the theme 'Social Outreach of the Curé of Ars'

Knock - Tuesday, 27 April in Our Lady’s Shrine, Knock, on the theme 'The Sacrament of Reconciliation'

Armagh - Wednesday, 28 April in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh, on the theme 'The Eucharist and Pastoral Leadership'. Arrival of relics for Mass at 12.30 pm. Adrama presentation will take place after Mass and this has been prepared by the children of Mount St Catherine’s Primary School Armagh. From 2.00 pm to 7.00 pm a short prayer service will take place on the hour. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available throughout this period. At 7.30 pm Mass will be celebrated and all concelebrants are welcome. The farewell ceremony for the relics will take place at 9.00 pm.

Thursday marked 100 days since the disaster and Trócaire's work continues thanks to the kind donations of parishes all over the country. In all over €6million was given to Trócaire and already, working with the Caritas network, 900,000 people have been provided with shelter. Over one million have been given health care. Over one-and-a-half million have been given regular food supplies or hot meals. Over 200,000 people have already been given access to clean water or have been provided with hygiene kits. None of this could have been possible without your help. Go to www.trocaire.org to find out more about where your money is being spent. Go raibh míle maith agaibh!
