Delia Hynes, R.I.P.
Your prayers are asked today for the repose of the soul of Delia Hynes, 24 Ashe Road. Delia's remains will be reposing at Conneely's Funeral Home on Monday, September 20th, from 5 to 7, when they will be removed to our church. Her Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday at 12 Noon, and the burial will be in Mount St. Joseph, Rahoon Cemetery.

Apostolic Work Apostolic Exhibition.
The Apostolic Work Association will hold its annual exhibition of work for the missions on Sunday, October 17th in the assembly hall, Scoil Íde, Ard na Mara, Salthill from 10 to 5 PM. Bishop Drennan has been invited to open the exhibition at 3 PM. Missionaries will speak of their work and hopes for the future. There will be a sale of work, cakes, raffles and children’s art competition.
Galway says NO to Health Cuts Slow Protest Walk.
The people of Galway are invited to participate in a slow walk on Saturday 25th September to protect our local public hospitals and health care services. Patients, carers, healthcare workers and the general public are asked to assemble at 2pm at Galway Cathedral to march together to Galway University Hospital for a short rally to inform the people of Galway of the crisis affecting our health service, that we desperately need to protect to meet the needs of our sick and elderly.
This event has been organised by the community group "Galway says NO to Health Cuts" and we hope that you will support this worthy cause.

"The Gift" is the name of the concert, which is an hour-long gospel interpretation of the nativity written by Graham Kendrick with a specially convened specially convened community gospel choir.
Concerts will be held in aid of local charities Christmas week. Invitations to mums and daughters, fathers and sons, indeed whole families; newly married couples, school children and city people from all walks of life and from all parts of Galway.
Ages from 7 to 80+ No audition All welcome
Last year we had 130 singers ~ looking to do the same again and invite even more people to get involved.

Parish Alcohol Initiative.
Parish Alcohol Initiative encourages parents to seek alternative ways to celebrate Junior Certificate results.
The Irish Bishops’ Drugs and Alcohol Initiative (IBDI) is calling on parents to assist their children to find new and healthy ways to celebrate their Junior Certificate results this week as an alternative to drinking alcohol.
John Taaffe Coordinator of the IBDI, said “The publication of Junior Certificate results this week marks a significant milestone in the lives of many young people who have completed many years of hard work. Teachers, parents and extended families deserve great credit for their support and guidance to young people over this period and they can rightly share in their success.
“The results also provide an opportune time for parents to educate their young people on alcohol and how easily it can adversely affect their lives. Stories and images of alcohol excess, which mar the annual publication of the results, can be prevented if a responsible attitude toward the dangers of alcohol has already been instilled in our young people.
“Parents are the first educators of their children. Celebrations of milestones in the lives of children are special and memorable events but they need not always involve alcohol. To parents who feel powerless when it comes to their children’s attitude and relationship with alcohol I strongly urge them to avail of existing resources and supports aimed at young people which encourage a healthy attitude towards their own wellbeing and which highlight the effect of alcohol and other drugs.
“We know that peer pressure has a huge impact on the decisions made by young people concerning drugs and alcohol. However young people are as influenced by what their parents do and say in relation to alcohol as they are by their peers. It is vitally important for parents to discuss the issue of alcohol with their children and to offer them alternatives.”
Ms Patricia Conway Chairperson of the Initiative concluded “As we congratulate the Junior Certificate class of 2010, I ask parents to talk to their young people about alcohol, related peer pressure and alternative ways to celebrate this important success in your child’s life.”

The Catholic Church in Ireland will celebrate the Day for Life 2010 on Sunday 3 October. The theme for this year’s Day for Life is the meaning of Christian death and care for those who are dying – Lord for your faithful people, life is changed, not ended.
Speaking about this year’s theme in a special video interview Bishop Fleming, Bishop of Killala and the Bishops’ Conference Day for Life delegate said: “The Day for Life celebrates life as given to us by God. This year’s theme talks about life and gives us a very rich view of the Catholic position of life, namely that no matter how long or how short life is and no matter what condition it is lived in, life has a value because it is given to us by God.”

The text of Pope Benedict XVI's message for the 26th World Youth Day, which will take place in Madrid from 16 - 21 August 2011, has been published. The theme of the message is Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith.
In his message Pope Benedict reflects on his youth and his path to priesthood. He also reflects on the last World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia. He encourages young people to reflect and to seek for something beyond everyday life: "There is a moment, when we are young, when each of us wonders: what meaning does my life have? What purpose and direction should I give to it? This is a very important moment, and it can worry us, perhaps for some time. We start wondering about the kind of work we should take up, the kind of relationships we should establish, the friendships we should cultivate... Here, once more, I think of my own youth. I was somehow aware quite early on that the Lord wanted me to be a priest. Then later, after the war, when I was in the seminary and at university on the way towards that goal, I had to recapture that certainty. I had to ask myself: is this really the path I was meant to take? Is this really God’s will for me? Will I be able to remain faithful to him and completely at his service? A decision like this demands a certain struggle. It cannot be otherwise. But then came the certainty: this is the right thing! Yes, the Lord wants me, and he will give me strength. If I listen to him and walk with him, I become truly myself. What counts is not the fulfilment of my desires, but of his will. In this way life becomes authentic."

The National Grandparents' Pilgrimage was founded by Catherine Wiley, a grandmother from Co Mayo, who wanted to do something to support and affirm grandparents and the important role that they play in families, the Church and society. Archbishop Michael Neary, Archbishop of Tuam, is Patron.
A new association for Grandparents was launched as part of the 2009 Pilgrimage. The Catholic Grandparents' Association (CGA) has been established to support grandparents and to affirm them in the important mission of handing on the faith to the next generation. The CGA was formally blessed by Pope Benedict XVI earlier this month. The blessing was received by Catherine Wiley, founder of the CGA. The text of Pope Benedict’s blessing reads as follows:

COPE Galway Community Catering have recently been shortlisted for the HSE Achievement Awards 2010. Community Catering is a local service dedicated to the provision of nutritional support for Galway’s older people with the objective of assisting older people to live their life independently and in their own home if that is their wish.

Cian: Hi there Bella, how did you get on at the Hip-Hop competition?
Bella: Great, but it was nerve wracking! The four of us in the group didn’t travel together and Emily went to the wrong dance centre, we were short on time and were really angry with her for not listening to the right address. Eventually after lots of texts and tantrums she arrived to the right centre and instead of giving out to her we were just so glad to see her. We even had time to go over the routine once before we were on stage!
Cian: Wow! That could have been nasty but guess what, your story reminds me of the Gospel this Sunday.
Bella: Eh? A hip hop dance competition in the Gospel???
Cian: Nah! It’s about when Jesus told the three parables about being lost and then when found God is so happy to have you back instead of being angry that you were lost in the first place!

Speaking about this year’s theme in a special video interview Bishop Fleming, Bishop of Killala and the Bishops’ Conference Day for Life delegate said: “The Day for Life celebrates life as given to us by God. This year’s theme talks about life and gives us a very rich view of the Catholic position of life, namely that no matter how long or how short life is and no matter what condition it is lived in, life has a value because it is given to us by God.”

The text of Pope Benedict XVI's message for the 26th World Youth Day, which will take place in Madrid from 16 - 21 August 2011, has been published. The theme of the message is Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith.
In his message Pope Benedict reflects on his youth and his path to priesthood. He also reflects on the last World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia. He encourages young people to reflect and to seek for something beyond everyday life: "There is a moment, when we are young, when each of us wonders: what meaning does my life have? What purpose and direction should I give to it? This is a very important moment, and it can worry us, perhaps for some time. We start wondering about the kind of work we should take up, the kind of relationships we should establish, the friendships we should cultivate... Here, once more, I think of my own youth. I was somehow aware quite early on that the Lord wanted me to be a priest. Then later, after the war, when I was in the seminary and at university on the way towards that goal, I had to recapture that certainty. I had to ask myself: is this really the path I was meant to take? Is this really God’s will for me? Will I be able to remain faithful to him and completely at his service? A decision like this demands a certain struggle. It cannot be otherwise. But then came the certainty: this is the right thing! Yes, the Lord wants me, and he will give me strength. If I listen to him and walk with him, I become truly myself. What counts is not the fulfilment of my desires, but of his will. In this way life becomes authentic."

A new association for Grandparents was launched as part of the 2009 Pilgrimage. The LMSI National Pilgrimage to Knock will take place on Saturday 4 September, commencing with Sung Latin Mass in the Extraordinary Form celebrated by Rev John Loftus. Mass will be followed by Stations of Cross and Benediction, all of which will take place in the old Parish Church. Our thanks to Archbishop Neary and Monsignor Quinn for the continuing permission.
This Mass will not affect the scheduled First Saturday Masses at St Patrick's in Cork or St Patrick's in Dungannon which will go ahead as per usual.
Volunteers are sought to act as stewards/ushers during the pilgrimage. The tasks required are not onerous, but help is very welcome. Approach John Heneghan or Father Loftus before Mass begins.

Bishop MacDaid urges road users to be safe and recommends prayer for motorists.
Bishop Liam MacDaid, Bishop of Clogher, has called on all road users, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, to take special care of themselves and their loved ones as they travel this August bank holiday weekend, which is the busiest weekend of the year on our roads.
Bishop MacDaid said “Ahead of our August bank holiday weekend, and in the wake of the most serious Irish road accident on record in Donegal on 12 July last, I ask that we exercise particular vigilance in terms of our road safety responsibilities over the next three days.
“As individuals we have an obligation to exercise a real duty of care to other road users by improving our driver behaviour, and at a public policy level, this improved behaviour needs to be matched with effective strategic planning and greater resourcing.
“Care for one another in the community is a basic value which travels across different cultures and different religions. This duty of care also applies to our road use and it is fundamental to the common good.”

Jesus is explaining to us that deciding to follow him is not about adding up every little thing we do and counting the cost, it is about taking the call to faith seriously and trying every day to live our Christianity. Look, take me and the team, being in the Championships was all we wanted, our manager told us that ‘Going for Gold’ was about being dedicated and working for that title! The Gospel today asks us to do the same thing! ‘Go for Gold’ as Christians means really working hard to be real followers of Jesus!

Latin Mass Society News.
The LMSI National Pilgrimage to Knock will take place on Saturday 4 September, commencing with Sung Latin Mass in the Extraordinary Form celebrated by Rev John Loftus. Mass will be followed by Stations of Cross and Benediction, all of which will take place in the old Parish Church. Our thanks to Archbishop Neary and Monsignor Quinn for the continuing permission.
This Mass will not affect the scheduled First Saturday Masses at St Patrick's in Cork or St Patrick's in Dungannon which will go ahead as per usual.
Volunteers are sought to act as stewards/ushers during the pilgrimage. The tasks required are not onerous, but help is very welcome. Approach John Heneghan or Father Loftus before Mass begins.

Bishop MacDaid urges road users to be safe and recommends prayer for motorists.
Bishop Liam MacDaid, Bishop of Clogher, has called on all road users, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, to take special care of themselves and their loved ones as they travel this August bank holiday weekend, which is the busiest weekend of the year on our roads.
Bishop MacDaid said “Ahead of our August bank holiday weekend, and in the wake of the most serious Irish road accident on record in Donegal on 12 July last, I ask that we exercise particular vigilance in terms of our road safety responsibilities over the next three days.
“As individuals we have an obligation to exercise a real duty of care to other road users by improving our driver behaviour, and at a public policy level, this improved behaviour needs to be matched with effective strategic planning and greater resourcing.
“Care for one another in the community is a basic value which travels across different cultures and different religions. This duty of care also applies to our road use and it is fundamental to the common good.”

August 15th is a very special day for us and for the church. Happy Feast Day!

In The Cathedral, over the Tabernacle, you can see a beautiful triptych depicting the Assumption. During the rigours of persecution that followed The Reformation, this triptych was thrown in the river, but, thankfully, rescued.
LARGE crowds are expected for the annual pilgrimage to Lady's Well on the outskirts of Athenry this Sunday (Aug 16).
The pilgrimage has been taking place annually for over 700 years to the holy well and shrine.
This Sunday Mass will be celebrated there at 3 pm with the parade leaving from Athenry town earlier.
Canon Tony King PP Athenry says that apart from being a great spiritual occasion the pilgrimage is also an event when people from many places meet in Athenry.

Mission: That the Church may be a ‘home’ for all people, ready to open its doors to any who are suffering from racial or religious discrimination, hunger or wars forcing them to emigrate to other countries.
Saint’s of the Irish Calendar in August.
9th: St. Felim was born in the sixth century in Breifne. He was a hermit near Kilmore, Co. Cavan, where he later founded a monastery. He is patron of Kilmore diocese.
9th: St. Nathy and the 12th: Sr. Attracta. Nathy is said to have been born in the barony of Leyny, Co. Sligo. He made a foundation in Achonry, where many students gathered to learn from him. He is buried in Achadh Cain, and is patron of Achonry diocese. St. Attracta is the secondary patron of Achonry. She lived in the sixth or seventh century. Local tradition remembers her great healing powers. Her convents were famous for hospitality and charity to the poor.
12th: St. Muiredach is regarded as the founder of the church at Killala. He may also be the founder and patron of the monastery of Inishmurray off the Sligo coast.

Saint’s of the Irish Calendar in August.
9th: St. Felim was born in the sixth century in Breifne. He was a hermit near Kilmore, Co. Cavan, where he later founded a monastery. He is patron of Kilmore diocese.
9th: St. Nathy and the 12th: Sr. Attracta. Nathy is said to have been born in the barony of Leyny, Co. Sligo. He made a foundation in Achonry, where many students gathered to learn from him. He is buried in Achadh Cain, and is patron of Achonry diocese. St. Attracta is the secondary patron of Achonry. She lived in the sixth or seventh century. Local tradition remembers her great healing powers. Her convents were famous for hospitality and charity to the poor.

1. St. Ignatius of Loyola.
We congratulate and pray for the Jesuit Community in Galway today, and thank them for their contribution to the life of our diocese.
The founder of the Jesuits was on his way to military fame and fortune when a cannon ball shattered his leg. Because there were no books of romance on hand during his convalescence, he whiled away the time reading a life of Christ and lives of the saints. His conscience was deeply touched, and a long, painful turning to Christ began. Having seen the Mother of God in a vision, he made a pilgrimage to her shrine at Montserrat (near Barcelona). He remained for almost a year at nearby Manresa, sometimes with the Dominicans, sometimes in a pauper’s hospice, often in a cave in the hills praying. After a period of great peace of mind, he went through a harrowing trial of scruples. There was no comfort in anything—prayer, fasting, sacraments, penance. At length, his peace of mind returned.
It was during this year of conversion that he began to write down material that later became his greatest work, the Spiritual Exercises.
He finally achieved his purpose of going to the Holy Land, but could not remain, as he planned, because of the hostility of the Turks. He spent the next 11 years in various European universities, studying with great difficulty, beginning almost as a child. Like many others, he fell victim twice to the suspicions of the time, and was twice jailed for brief periods.
In 1534, at the age of 43, he and six others (one of whom was St. Francis Xavier) vowed to live in poverty and chastity and to go to the Holy Land. If this became impossible, they vowed to offer themselves to the apostolic service of the pope. The latter became the only choice. Four years later Ignatius made the association permanent. The new Society of Jesus was approved by Paul III, and Ignatius was elected to serve as the first general.
When companions were sent on various missions by the pope, Ignatius remained in Rome, consolidating the new venture, but still finding time to found homes for orphans, catechumens and penitents. He founded the Roman College, intended to be the model of all other colleges of the Society.
Ignatius was a true mystic. He centred his spiritual life on the essential foundations of Christianity—the Trinity, Christ, the Eucharist. His spirituality is expressed in the Jesuit motto, ad majorem Dei gloriam—“for the greater glory of God.” In his concept, obedience was to be the prominent virtue, to assure the effectiveness and mobility of his men. All activity was to be guided by a true love of the Church and unconditional obedience to the Holy Father, for which reason all professed members took a fourth vow to go wherever the pope should send them for the salvation of souls.
2. St. Mary Magdalene.
Except for the mother of Jesus, few women are more honoured in the Bible than Mary Magdalene. Yet she could well be the patron of the slandered, since there has been a persistent legend in the Church that she is the unnamed sinful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus in Luke 7:36 50. Most Scripture scholars today point out that there is no scriptural basis for confusing the two women. Mary Magdalene, that is, “of Magdala,” was the one from whom Christ cast out “seven demons” (Luke 8:2)—an indication, at the worst, of extreme demonic possession or, possibly, severe illness.
Father W.J. Harrington, O.P., writing in the New Catholic Commentary, says that “seven demons” “does not mean that Mary had lived an immoral life—a conclusion reached only by means of a mistaken identification with the anonymous woman of Luke 7:36.” Father Edward Mally, S.J., writing in the Jerome Biblical Commentary, agrees that she “is not...the same as the sinner of Luke 7:37, despite the later Western romantic tradition about her.”
Mary Magdalene was one of the many “who were assisting them [Jesus and the Twelve] out of their means.” She was one of those who stood by the cross of Jesus with his mother. And, of all the “official” witnesses that might have been chosen for the first awareness of the Resurrection, she was the one to whom that privilege was given. She is known as the "Apostle to the Apostles."
Comment:
Mary Magdalene has been a victim of mistaken identity for almost 20 centuries. Yet she would no doubt insist that it makes no difference. We are all sinners in need of the saving power of God, whether our sins have been lurid or not. More importantly, we are all, with her, “unofficial” witnesses of the Resurrection.

Galway Cathedral Recitals 2010.
Galway Cathedral Recitals is delighted to announce its seventeenth annual series of summer concerts.
The 2010 series runs over six successive Thursdays from 8 July until 12 August 2010. As always, an exciting and varied season of concerts is in store.
The opening concert on 8 July is an organ recital by Susan Landale. A native of Scotland and now living and working in Paris, Ms Landale is world-renowned as a performer and a teacher.
A special programme of early music is presented on 15 July by Róisín O'Grady and Malcolm Proud. Róisín O'Grady's singing has earned high distinction for her, while Malcolm Proud is also respected around the world for his keyboard performances; this concert will feature both of the Cathedral organs as well as Malcolm's own harpsichord.
Galway Cathedral organist Raymond O'Donnell is a regular part of this annual series. His programme on 22 July will focus on 19th- and 20th-century music of Germany and England.
Uwe Bestert is organist at one of Hamburg's major churches. His programme on 29 July concentrates on German music covering six centuries.
Michael Harrison and Emma Gibbins present a concert of music for trumpet and organ on 5 August.
Finally, the closing concert on 12 August is given by the Chamber Philharmonia Cologne. A frequent and popular visitor to Ireland, the orchestra presents a programme of Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart and Tchaikovski in what promises to be an exciting and enjoyable performance.

Questions people ask.
Q. Who was St Swithin and why is his feast day associated with prediction of the weather?
A. Swithin was Bishop of Winchester, England, in the ninth century. He was a great lover of nature and wished to be buried outdoors where the light of the sun and the sweet rain of heaven might fall on his grave. However, contrary to his wishes, he was buried inside the cathedral. Guess what. It rained cats and dogs for forty days until they decided to transfer his remains outdoors. It may be a nice story but weather records don’t back up the myth.

Bella: Hi there! Cian: What’s up? Hey we just practised our play for the end of year Mass today.
Bella: Well what is it about and what part do you play?
Cian: It’s a modern version of the Good Samaritan and I am a biker guy who crashes his bike and ends up lying there needing help. It is sooooo cool because I get to wear all the leather gear and Eme is the Good Samaritan and she and I have a good laugh doing it. Bella: Duh! Not really supposed to be a laugh Cian! … The message is still as fresh today as it ever was; try to be kind and helpful to all people from all places and all races.
Cian: Yeah I know, but Eme is great fun though and we get on really well since she moved to Ireland, so can’t the Good Samaritan be good fun too?!!!
Remember to be helpful at least once a day, and be helpful with a good heart!

Q. Who was St Swithin and why is his feast day associated with prediction of the weather?
A. Swithin was Bishop of Winchester, England, in the ninth century. He was a great lover of nature and wished to be buried outdoors where the light of the sun and the sweet rain of heaven might fall on his grave. However, contrary to his wishes, he was buried inside the cathedral. Guess what. It rained cats and dogs for forty days until they decided to transfer his remains outdoors. It may be a nice story but weather records don’t back up the myth.

Luke 10:25-37 • The Good Samaritan
Bella: Hi there! Cian: What’s up? Hey we just practised our play for the end of year Mass today.
Bella: Well what is it about and what part do you play?
Cian: It’s a modern version of the Good Samaritan and I am a biker guy who crashes his bike and ends up lying there needing help. It is sooooo cool because I get to wear all the leather gear and Eme is the Good Samaritan and she and I have a good laugh doing it. Bella: Duh! Not really supposed to be a laugh Cian! … The message is still as fresh today as it ever was; try to be kind and helpful to all people from all places and all races.
Cian: Yeah I know, but Eme is great fun though and we get on really well since she moved to Ireland, so can’t the Good Samaritan be good fun too?!!!
Remember to be helpful at least once a day, and be helpful with a good heart!
