Day for Life 2010 on the meaning of Christian death and care for those who are dying

• Special feature on:

• Day for Life Mass to be broadcast by RTÉ 1 from Ballina, Co Mayo

The Catholic Church in Ireland will celebrate the Day for Life 2010 on Sunday 3 October. The theme for this year’s Day for Life is the meaning of Christian death and care for those who are dying – Lord for your faithful people, life is changed, not ended.

Speaking about this year’s theme in a special video interview Bishop Fleming, Bishop of Killala and the Bishops’ Conference Day for Life delegate said: “The Day for Life celebrates life as given to us by God. This year’s theme talks about life and gives us a very rich view of the Catholic position of life, namely that no matter how long or how short life is and no matter what condition it is lived in, life has a value because it is given to us by God.”

Bishop Fleming’s interview in available as part of a special feature which is now available on the Catholic Bishops’ website –

Publication of Pope Benedict XVI's Message for the 2011 World Youth Day in Madrid (16 - 21 August)

Theme: “Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith” (cf. Col 2:7)

The text of Pope Benedict XVI's message for the 26th World Youth Day, which will take place in Madrid from 16 - 21 August 2011, has been published. The theme of the message is Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith.

In his message Pope Benedict reflects on his youth and his path to priesthood. He also reflects on the last World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia. He encourages young people to reflect and to seek for something beyond everyday life: "There is a moment, when we are young, when each of us wonders: what meaning does my life have? What purpose and direction should I give to it? This is a very important moment, and it can worry us, perhaps for some time. We start wondering about the kind of work we should take up, the kind of relationships we should establish, the friendships we should cultivate... Here, once more, I think of my own youth. I was somehow aware quite early on that the Lord wanted me to be a priest. Then later, after the war, when I was in the seminary and at university on the way towards that goal, I had to recapture that certainty. I had to ask myself: is this really the path I was meant to take? Is this really God’s will for me? Will I be able to remain faithful to him and completely at his service? A decision like this demands a certain struggle. It cannot be otherwise. But then came the certainty: this is the right thing! Yes, the Lord wants me, and he will give me strength. If I listen to him and walk with him, I become truly myself. What counts is not the fulfilment of my desires, but of his will. In this way life becomes authentic."

Tomorrow! Bishop John McAreavey to lead fourth National Grandparents’ pilgrimage to Knock Shrine .

• Special feature now available on

http://www.catholicbishops.ie/

Bishop John McAreavey, Bishop of Dromore will lead the fourth National Grandparents’ Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Knock Shrine, Co Mayo, on Sunday 12 September next. More than 10,000 grandparents from across Ireland are expected to be present at this year’s pilgrimage.

A special feature on the pilgrimage is now available on the Catholic Bishops’ website –

http://www.catholicbishops.ie/

The feature includes:

An interview with Bishop McAreavey in which he talks about his expectations for this years pilgrimage and of the importance of grandparents in the handing on of the faith

Video highlights from last year’s pilgrimage which was led by Cardinal Seán Brady

Background information on the pilgrimage and details of this year’s event

A gallery of images from previous pilgrimages

The National Grandparents' Pilgrimage was founded by Catherine Wiley, a grandmother from Co Mayo, who wanted to do something to support and affirm grandparents and the important role that they play in families, the Church and society. Archbishop Michael Neary, Archbishop of Tuam, is Patron.

A new association for Grandparents was launched as part of the 2009 Pilgrimage. The Catholic Grandparents' Association (CGA) has been established to support grandparents and to affirm them in the important mission of handing on the faith to the next generation. The CGA was formally blessed by Pope Benedict XVI earlier this month. The blessing was received by Catherine Wiley, founder of the CGA. The text of Pope Benedict’s blessing reads as follows:

“Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI invokes God’s Blessings of Joy and Peace upon you and all of the Association. Make them [grandparents] teachers of wisdom and courage, that they may pass on to future generations the fruits of their mature human and spiritual experience.”

Pope Benedict also comments on the need for young people to strengthen their faith: "Even though the set of values underpinning society comes from the Gospel – values like the sense of the dignity of the person, of solidarity, of work and of the family –, we see a certain “eclipse of God” taking place, a kind of amnesia which, albeit not an outright rejection of Christianity, is nonetheless a denial of the treasure of our faith, a denial that could lead to the loss of our deepest identity. For this reason, dear friends, I encourage you to strengthen your faith in God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. You are the future of society and of the Church!"

Prayer Walks.

Join a band of people from various churches and none, in walking this ancient route. We walk at a gentle pace so that we can meet each day with other walkers, local people and visitors. You can join us for any part, or all, of the routes. There will be places to rest and pray together, to enjoy the wildlife and to sing together. Bring an instrument if you play, and a packed lunch. No need to book.

The prayer walks are part of a Pioneer Ministry of the Methodist Church.

Cian and Bella, Kids Corner

Luke 15:1-32 • Lost and Found

Cian: Hi there Bella, how did you get on at the Hip-Hop competition?

Bella: Great, but it was nerve wracking! The four of us in the group didn’t travel together and Emily went to the wrong dance centre, we were short on time and were really angry with her for not listening to the right address. Eventually after lots of texts and tantrums she arrived to the right centre and instead of giving out to her we were just so glad to see her. We even had time to go over the routine once before we were on stage!

Cian: Wow! That could have been nasty but guess what, your story reminds me of the Gospel this Sunday.

Bella: Eh? A hip hop dance competition in the Gospel???

Cian: Nah! It’s about when Jesus told the three parables about being lost and then when found God is so happy to have you back instead of being angry that you were lost in the first place!

Slowly read over the three parables in the Gospel this Sunday and listen carefully to their message.
