Happy Mothers Day!

Mass intentions for the week ahead 3rd April 2011

Saturday 2nd April

Vigil Mass     6.30 pm  Stuart Murphy

Sunday 3rd April, Mothers Day, Laetare Sunday
Laetare Sunday  so called from the incipit of the Introit at Mass, "Laetare Jerusalem" ("O be joyful, Jerusalem"), is a name often used to denote the fourth Sunday of the season of Lent in the Christian liturgical calendar. This Sunday is also known as Mothering Sunday, Refreshment Sunday, Mid-Lent Sunday (in French mi-carême), and Rose Sunday (because the golden rose sent by the popes to Catholic sovereigns used to be blessed at this time). The term "Laetare Sunday" is used predominantly, though not exclusively, by Roman Catholics and Anglicans. The word translates from the Latin laetare, singular imperative of laetari to rejoice.

Remember to continue the great support of Trócaire this Lent

On this fourth Sunday in Lent we think of vulnerable mothers overseas who are raising their children against the odds. The inequalities that women and girls face all over the developing world condemn them to a future of poverty. By supporting the Trócaire Lenten campaign you can help them look forward to a better future.

Local Trócaire event here in Gaillimh

The Keith Finnegan Show will be broadcasting from Kenya on Monday 11th April in association with Trócaire. The object of our visit is to promote the work that Trócaire does in Africa, particularly during this their 38th Lenten Campaign. We will be heading out on Friday to Nairobi; Saturday will be spent visiting and interviewing rural project participants; Sunday we will visit a slum area in Nairobi – the largest slum in the world. In conjunction with our visit we are hoping to fundraise for 1000 solar light lamps which help families save money on fuel and are much safer than open flame lighting. These lifesaving lamps cost €15 euro each• Donations to Trócaire - 1850 408 408, Lenten campaign with Galway Bay FM• or send / drop in to the station – Sandy Road, Galway Thank you so much for your help *********************************************Fionnuala Rabbitt, Producer of 'The Keith Finnegan Show’. The importance of the collection for the Holy Places on Good Friday
Archbishop Leonardo Cardinal Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches has written to Bishop Martin Drennan regarding the special collection on Good Friday (April 22) for the Holy Places.

Cardinal Sandri would like to draw people's attention to how important this collection is to the Holy Land.  The money is not only spent on maintaining religious sights significant to Christians, but it is also spent on providing essential services to Christian Families living in the Holy Land who are suffering as a result of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
Bishops’ Council for Education response to Minister Quinn’s announcement concerning the Forum on Patronage and Pluralism in the Primary Sector

The Council for Education of the Irish Episcopal Conference welcomes the announcement by the Minister for Education and Skills, Mr Ruairi Quinn TD, of the appointment of Dr. John Coolahan, Professor Emeritus at NUI Maynooth, as Chairperson of the Advisory Group for the recently announced Forum on School Patronage assisted by Dr. Caroline Hussey, former Registrar and Deputy President of University College Dublin and Ms Fionnuala Kilfeather, former chief executive of the National Parents’ Council – Primary.
In response to the publication of data on Catholic School Patronage by the Department of Education and Skills in August 2010 the Catholic Schools Partnership, which was established by the Irish Episcopal Conference and the Conference of Religious of Ireland (CORI), has undertaken a detailed process of research and consultation. This has involved further analysis of parental understanding of school patronage, the preparation of a position paper on Catholic schools which will be published next week and on-going consultation within the Church with various stakeholders. The results of this consultation will be analysed at four regional assemblies in June 2011 with representatives from all dioceses.
