Statement by the Catholic Bishops of The Six Counties

on the ‘First All-Ireland Conference on Abortion and Clinical Practice’

organised jointly by the Family Planning Association in Britain and Ireland

The Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle, Thursday 7th & Friday 8th October 2010.

We deplore and oppose the conference to be held this evening and tomorrow in the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle entitled the ‘First All-Ireland Conference on Abortion and Clinical Practice’.

This conference is clearly designed to undermine the rights and welfare of children in the womb and the consistently pro-life position of the majority of people on this island. It is an attempt to normalise what is unacceptable. We appeal to all those who cherish the inherent dignity of human life in all its stages to join us in expressing opposition to this event.

Every human life is worthy of protection from the moment of conception to natural death. The dignity of the human person is absolute and inviolable. We call on public representatives to express their opposition to this conference and to promote and defend a legislative environment which respects the inherent dignity of life in all it stages.

A conference which promotes themes such as ‘manual vacuum aspiration’ and ‘issues in late abortion’ is an affront to the dignity of the human person. It is gravely immoral. Respect should be shown in all circumstances for the life and well being of both the mother and the unborn child.

One of the objectives of the conference is to learn about how clinicians can be trained to provide abortion services. This raises questions about how the statutory authorities should respond to such an event in a jurisdiction where abortion is illegal in most circumstances.

No one should be forced to act against their conscience on a moral issue as fundamental as the right to life of the unborn. Employers and others must therefore uphold the right of every person to have their moral conscience and deeply held religious beliefs respected.

We call on Catholics and other Christians to renew their efforts to build a culture of life and to pray in particular for a renewed appreciation of the preciousness and inherent dignity of the life of the child in the womb.

Bishop Colm O’Reilly calls Catholics “together in mission” to renew their commitment to proclaim the Gospel throughout Mission Month October 2010.

Special feature on Mission Month available on

Each year the Catholic Church designates the whole month of October as mission month. The year Sunday 24 October is Mission Sunday, the worldwide day of prayer for the missions. Bishop Colm O’Reilly, Chairman of the Bishops' Council for the Missions, today joins with the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI to highlight Mission Month as an “opportunity to renew the commitment to proclaim the Gospel and to give pastoral activities greater missionary perspective.”

“October in the Church calendar is a special time to reflect on Mission, as well as to renew our Missionary work for today”, Bishop O’Reilly continued.

Resources for Mission Month 2010 are now available at

http://www.catholicbishops.ie/

Press release on the preparatory meetings for the Apostolic Visitation in Ireland.

On 5 October 2010, the Prefect and the Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and representatives from the Holy See held a preparatory meeting in Rome with the Apostolic Visitators named by the Holy Father for the Apostolic Visitation to the four Metropolitan Archdioceses of Ireland: His Eminence Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor; His Eminence Seán P. O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap.; the Most Reverend Thomas C. Collins; the Most Reverend Terrence T. Prendergast, S.J.

Mindful of the tragic abuse of children that has taken place in Ireland, the participants discussed the particular aspects of this important Visitation. Pastoral in nature, the Visitation "is intended to assist the local Church on her path of renewal" (Pastoral Letter of Pope Benedict XVI to the Catholics of Ireland) and is a sign of the Holy Father’s desire, as the Successor of Peter, to offer his pastoral solicitude to the Church in Ireland. The Visitators will give particular attention to victims of abuse and their families, but will also meet with and listen to a variety of people, including ecclesiastical authorities, lay faithful and those involved with the crucial work of safeguarding of children.

On 6 October 2010, as had been previously planned, His Eminence Cardinal Seán B. Brady, Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Reverend Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Reverend Dermot Clifford, Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, and the Most Reverend Michael Neary, Archbishop of Tuam, celebrated the Mass of the Holy Spirit together with the Visitators and Superiors from the Congregation for Bishops and the Secretariat of State. The meeting that followed, marked by fraternal warmth and mutual collaboration, summarized the discussions from the previous day and focused on the organization of the Apostolic Visitation and the Archdioceses involved.

All participants are hopeful that this significant endeavour will be an instrument of purification and healing for the Church in Ireland and help to restore the trust and hope of the faithful there.

- In his letter Pope Benedict XVI:

says to the victims of abuse and their families: ‘You have suffered grievously and I am truly sorry’

expresses deep dismay at ‘sinful and criminal acts and the way the Church authorities in Ireland dealt with them’

calls on Church leaders in Ireland to continue to cooperate fully with the civil authorities

says that only decisive action carried out with complete honesty and transparency will restore the respect and good will of the Irish people towards the Church

concludes his letter with a special 'Prayer for the Church in Ireland', which he composed himself.

- The following are extracts from the press release published on 31 May 2010 by the Vatican concerning the Apostolic Visitation in Ireland:

Following the Holy Father’s Letter to the Catholics of Ireland, the Apostolic Visitation of certain Irish dioceses, seminaries and religious congregations will begin in autumn of this year.

Through this Visitation, the Holy See intends to offer assistance to the Bishops, clergy, religious and lay faithful as they seek to respond adequately to the situation caused by the tragic cases of abuse perpetrated by priests and religious upon minors. It is also intended to contribute to the desired spiritual and moral renewal that is already being vigorously pursued by the Church in Ireland.

The Apostolic Visitors will set out to explore more deeply questions concerning the handling of cases of abuse and the assistance owed to the victims; they will monitor the effectiveness of and seek possible improvements to the current procedures for preventing abuse, taking as their points of reference the Pontifical Motu Proprio "Sacramentorum Sanctitatis Tutela" and the norms contained in Safeguarding Children: Standards and Guidance Document for the Catholic Church in Ireland, commissioned and produced by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church.

The Visitors named by the Holy Father for the dioceses are: His Eminence Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Emeritus Archbishop of Westminster, for the Archdiocese of Armagh; His Eminence Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, for the Archdiocese of Dublin; the Most Reverend Thomas Christopher Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, for the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly; the Most Reverend Terrence Thomas Prendergast, Archbishop of Ottawa, for the Archdiocese of Tuam.

INVITATION TO CONFERENCE.

This year, Viatores Christi is celebrating its 50th year of recruiting, training and placing people from all walks of life in long-term overseas missionary roles. As we reach this important milestone, we feel that it would be very timely and beneficial at this landmark in our existence to be able to bring together those in the field of mission, development and volunteering to explore where we are all going in the future and how we can continue Ireland’s long tradition of working to make the world a better, fairer place for everyone to live a more human life.

To this end, we are planning a jubilee conference on 29th and 30th October 2010 in Wynn’s Hotel, Dublin. The Conference will be entitled

Mission. .. . Development. . . Volunteering. . . What Next?

Exploring Ways Forward. . . Together!

The conference will run from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening, and will feature workshops, keynote speakers and plenary sessions as well as a social evening on the Friday night.

The conference will feature speakers from Africa, Latin America and Ireland, including:

• Patty Abozaglo, Trocaire Programme Officer for Horn/E Africa,

• Dr. Seán Ruth, author of ‘Leadership and Liberation: A Psychological Approach’

• Silas Siakor, director of the Sustainable Development Institute in Liberia

• Rev. Dr. Sahr Yambasu, Methodist minister (formerly Galway) and development specialist

• Sylvia Cachino and others

• Viatores Christi Haitian Team - Haiti Earthquake – Natural Disasters Case study: Was It Really a Natural Disaster

Talks and workshops on:

• listening to voices from the global South;

• ethics and best practice in development; leadership, liberation and the role of an ally;

• …and many other topics relevant to all those working in mission and development.

• exhibits – social evening – group discussions – practical proposals

The aim of the conference is to contribute to the advancement of thinking in mission, aid and development -- our common area of interest and concern. We wish to explore and discuss the long

tradition of Ireland’s sons and daughters who brought their lives and skills to share with those in need in our world.

We would therefore be grateful if you could see fit to assist us in any way that you can by promoting the conference to your own members and attending the conference. We are also inviting all those who are involved in the field of mission, development, volunteering, advocacy, etc., to have a stand at the conference where you may publicise the work of your own organisation/group and how we can all work collaboratively in the future.

Conference Fees

The cost per delegate is €35 per person (concessions available)

Cost of stand + two delegates is €100.

Kids Corner with Cian and Bella.

Luke 17:11-19 • Ungrateful, Me???

Cian: Hi there Bella, Why have you got your sad face on?

Bella: In school we were reading about the flooding that happened in Pakistan during the summer and how awful it was for sooo many families. We are having a car boot sale to raise money and help out. I was just thinking that we are so ‘whingy’ in our lives, we have so much to be grateful for but we regularly forget this and sometimes don’t even think of thanking our parents and God.

Cian: Oh Man, now you have me feeling bad too! But wait, I thanked God for helping me with the Drumcondra tests last week, that was that a start?!

Bella: It sure was but you can find all your Xbox games and stuff that are in good condition that you don’t use and bring them to our car boot sale, that will be another way to say thanks, by giving and helping others in need.

How will you give thanks for your life and faith today?

This week: Confessions for Fourth Class, Scoil Bhríde, Wednesday, October 13th, at 11:30.
