Halloween, our Christian faith and our Celtic heritage.

Below is an excellent COPYRIGHT excerpt from:

http://www.americancatholic.org/

When you think of Halloween, what comes to mind? For a lot of people, Halloween has become synonymous with candy, costumes, scary stuff, witches, ghosts and pumpkins. But do you know the Christian connection to the holiday?

The true origins of Halloween lie with the ancient Celtic tribes who lived in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany. For the Celts, November 1 marked the beginning of a new year and the coming of winter. The night before the New Year, they celebrated the festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead. During this festival, Celts believed the souls of the dead including ghosts, goblins and witches returned to mingle with the living. In order to scare away the evil spirits, people would wear masks and light bonfires.

When the Romans conquered the Celts, they added their own touches to the Samhain festival, such as making centrepieces out of apples and nuts for Pomona, the Roman goddess of the orchards. The Romans also bobbed for apples and drank cider traditions which may sound familiar to you. But where does the Christian aspect of the holiday come into play? In 835, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later all saints) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallows Even or holy evening. Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day.

The purpose of these feasts is to remember those who have died, whether they are officially recognized by the Church as saints or not. It is a celebration of the communion of saints, which reminds us that the Church is not bound by space or time.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that through the communion of saints a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things (#1475).

Role of the Catholic Church in Education.

Below is an excerpt from an address delivered by Bishop Donal McKeown at the Irish Inter-Church Meeting entitled 'The Churches and Education - Context, Vision and Values' in the Emmaus Centre, Swords, Co Dublin on 21 October 2010. Bishop McKeown is Auxiliary Bishop of Down and Connor and Chair of the Northern Ireland Commission for Catholic Education. NICCE represents the Trustees of all primary and secondary Catholic schools on the Island of Ireland.

Conclusion.

Despite tragic and shameful stories of children being abused sexually, physically or psychologically in Church establishments across the world, Irish churches will continue to seek what new roles they might play in mainstream educational provision and in how they try to proclaim Christian faith - for as Pope John Paul II said in Ireland 31 years ago, “every new generation is a new continent to be conquered for Christ.” However, those roles will have to be sought with both humility and openness to what the Spirit is saying to the Churches. It is a ministry in the service of the Gospel and not of institutional power, in the service of the world and not of ourselves.

Our different church traditions will continue to approach this challenge, aware that we often come with often unacknowledged but very real diversity in theological perspectives on the relationships between church and state. However, it would be a real tragedy if the voice of faith allowed itself to be seen as an intruder in the public forum. It will in some circumstances have to play the part of the prophet, the voice crying in the wilderness. However, the scriptures show that this is not necessarily a bad place to be. If education is what remains after you have forgotten all that you were ever taught, then I remain excited by the prospect of finding new ways together so that faith in Christ will continue to change hearts and to purify reason. And it is an enthusiasm for which I do not apologise!

A message from Older and Bolder.

You know what the State Pension means for an older person, that’s why you've joined us in our campaign to defend the State Pension.

Cuts would make it harder for older people to stay independent, involved in community life, and financially secure.

But we need to get the message out there to people who maybe haven't yet given the issue much thought, and that's where we need your help. Award-winning film director Ken Wardrop has helped us with a powerful short video, aiming to bring to life the importance of the State Pension to older people in Ireland.

We need to get this video seen as widely as possible, to help the Irish people understand that now is the time to stand up and defend the pension, now and for all our futures.

Can you help us?

CELEBRATE MISSION SUNDAY.

This Sunday is Mission Sunday and we unite on this special day with all Churches worldwide, “together in mission”, to celebrate our faith and the spreading of God’s love to far distant missionary lands. Let us individually and as communities assist the missions by prayer and financial help so that they may continue their tremendous work “from village to village proclaiming the Good News”. (Today’s Gospel)

The 1,900 Irish missionaries across the globe greatly appreciate your loyalty and support to their work in the spreading of the Good News, God’s word, to all corners of the world. On this special day they unite with us spiritually.

We understand that in these difficult economic times there are many pressures on our personal finances and ask you to please give as generously as you can.

A little goes a long way – universally it will make a difference to World Missions.

May we all enjoy and share the comfort of God’s Word!

Luke 9:1-6 • Mission Possible!

Cian: Hi there Guys, Bella is away so I’m gonna tell you about this Sunday’s Gospel. I have called it ‘Mission Possible’! because that is exactly what it is about. I thought of it ‘coz I love my Xbox army games and that kind of thing. When our teacher was talking about the Gospel I realised that God is like the Guy who gives the troops their mission, and we are the troops who try our best to complete that mission. Except for one thing, this is not an Xbox game, this is life! The difference, there are no snipers and shootings, no guns or hard hats! Our mission from God is to spread faith and love. Yeah, might sound soft but this is not an easy mission, and many people lead a life without God, but troops, not me! Ciano is keeping it real with his ‘mission possible’ because I have faith, and I want to share it with others. I do it in little ways but each day I try! Over and out troops!!

Have you a mission from God?

Reminder! Next Sunday, October 31st, the Monthly Preparation Mass for our Do this in Memory of Me First Communion Programme takes place at the usual time of 11.

A Message from Trócaire.

It is now three months since devastating floods hit Pakistan and Trócaire has expressed sincere thanks to everyone that supported its emergency appeal.

Over the past few months people have generously donated over €5.5million (£5m) to help survivors of the disaster. Almost half of this, €2.5million (£2.3m) was raised as a result of the church collections that were held around the country in August. This figure is expected to increase to €4million (£3.6m) in the coming weeks.

Thanks to the generosity of clergy and parishioners Trócaire was able to rescue over 20,000 people from the floodwaters in the first weeks of the disaster and provide more than 100,000 people with food, water, hygiene kits and other essentials. Trócaire is now providing seeds, tools and other essentials so that families can begin to recover and rebuild their livelihoods.

Trócaire would like to thank dioceses and parishes for their extraordinary response to the Pakistan crisis. For more information about how your support has changed lives log onto www.trocaire.org or call 1850 408 408 (ROI) / 0800 912 1200 (Six Counties)

What is Anam Cara?

Up until to 2008 there was no dedicated organisation that offered parents and families the relevant support following the death of a child. Often parents struggle to come to terms with their loss and would feel very alone in their grief.

It can be hard to imagine the pain and despair that comes with such a loss. Yet each year in Ireland at least 1,900 families have to face every parent’s worst fear.

Anam Cara is a national voluntary organisation set up by bereaved parents brought together following the devastating loss of our children. Anam Cara provides services, support and understanding to all families who have experienced the tragic death of a son or daughter regardless of age or circumstances of their death.

Since launching in 2008 Anam Cara has been instrumental in bringing together hundreds of bereaved families to support each other and avail of the appropriate services that Anam Cara provides for Mums, Dads, brothers and sisters to hopefully help them through the painful and toug times after the death of their child/sibling. We now want to extend our services throughout the 32 counties.

What is Anam Cara Awareness Campaign about?

The Anam Cara Awareness Campaign will run for the month of October and finishes with our Annual “Balloon to Remember event” which culminates in the release of thousands of balloons in memory of the children who are no longer with us. This event takes place on 2nd November 2010 at Lloyd Park in Tullamore, Co. Offaly.

As part of this campaign we are currently selling our Anam Cara Pins at a variety of retail outlets nationwide. Anam Cara is a relatively new charity. We really need to grow awareness among the general public and encourage them to show their support by purchasing an Anam Cara Pin this month. By wearing this pin not only will people visibly support Anam Cara but the wearer will also be showing their support for the many bereaved parents in Ireland who will never forget their child who has died.

If you need any other information, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

The Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle, Thursday 7th & Friday 8th October 2010.

We deplore and oppose the conference to be held this evening and tomorrow in the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle entitled the ‘First All-Ireland Conference on Abortion and Clinical Practice’.

This conference is clearly designed to undermine the rights and welfare of children in the womb and the consistently pro-life position of the majority of people on this island. It is an attempt to normalise what is unacceptable. We appeal to all those who cherish the inherent dignity of human life in all its stages to join us in expressing opposition to this event.

Every human life is worthy of protection from the moment of conception to natural death. The dignity of the human person is absolute and inviolable. We call on public representatives to express their opposition to this conference and to promote and defend a legislative environment which respects the inherent dignity of life in all it stages.

A conference which promotes themes such as ‘manual vacuum aspiration’ and ‘issues in late abortion’ is an affront to the dignity of the human person. It is gravely immoral. Respect should be shown in all circumstances for the life and well being of both the mother and the unborn child.

One of the objectives of the conference is to learn about how clinicians can be trained to provide abortion services. This raises questions about how the statutory authorities should respond to such an event in a jurisdiction where abortion is illegal in most circumstances.

No one should be forced to act against their conscience on a moral issue as fundamental as the right to life of the unborn. Employers and others must therefore uphold the right of every person to have their moral conscience and deeply held religious beliefs respected.

We call on Catholics and other Christians to renew their efforts to build a culture of life and to pray in particular for a renewed appreciation of the preciousness and inherent dignity of the life of the child in the womb.

Press release on the preparatory meetings for the Apostolic Visitation in Ireland.

On 5 October 2010, the Prefect and the Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and representatives from the Holy See held a preparatory meeting in Rome with the Apostolic Visitators named by the Holy Father for the Apostolic Visitation to the four Metropolitan Archdioceses of Ireland: His Eminence Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor; His Eminence Seán P. O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap.; the Most Reverend Thomas C. Collins; the Most Reverend Terrence T. Prendergast, S.J.

Mindful of the tragic abuse of children that has taken place in Ireland, the participants discussed the particular aspects of this important Visitation. Pastoral in nature, the Visitation "is intended to assist the local Church on her path of renewal" (Pastoral Letter of Pope Benedict XVI to the Catholics of Ireland) and is a sign of the Holy Father’s desire, as the Successor of Peter, to offer his pastoral solicitude to the Church in Ireland. The Visitators will give particular attention to victims of abuse and their families, but will also meet with and listen to a variety of people, including ecclesiastical authorities, lay faithful and those involved with the crucial work of safeguarding of children.

On 6 October 2010, as had been previously planned, His Eminence Cardinal Seán B. Brady, Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Reverend Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Reverend Dermot Clifford, Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, and the Most Reverend Michael Neary, Archbishop of Tuam, celebrated the Mass of the Holy Spirit together with the Visitators and Superiors from the Congregation for Bishops and the Secretariat of State. The meeting that followed, marked by fraternal warmth and mutual collaboration, summarized the discussions from the previous day and focused on the organization of the Apostolic Visitation and the Archdioceses involved.

All participants are hopeful that this significant endeavour will be an instrument of purification and healing for the Church in Ireland and help to restore the trust and hope of the faithful there.

- In his letter Pope Benedict XVI:

says to the victims of abuse and their families: ‘You have suffered grievously and I am truly sorry’

expresses deep dismay at ‘sinful and criminal acts and the way the Church authorities in Ireland dealt with them’

calls on Church leaders in Ireland to continue to cooperate fully with the civil authorities

says that only decisive action carried out with complete honesty and transparency will restore the respect and good will of the Irish people towards the Church

concludes his letter with a special 'Prayer for the Church in Ireland', which he composed himself.

- The following are extracts from the press release published on 31 May 2010 by the Vatican concerning the Apostolic Visitation in Ireland:

Following the Holy Father’s Letter to the Catholics of Ireland, the Apostolic Visitation of certain Irish dioceses, seminaries and religious congregations will begin in autumn of this year.

Through this Visitation, the Holy See intends to offer assistance to the Bishops, clergy, religious and lay faithful as they seek to respond adequately to the situation caused by the tragic cases of abuse perpetrated by priests and religious upon minors. It is also intended to contribute to the desired spiritual and moral renewal that is already being vigorously pursued by the Church in Ireland.

The Apostolic Visitors will set out to explore more deeply questions concerning the handling of cases of abuse and the assistance owed to the victims; they will monitor the effectiveness of and seek possible improvements to the current procedures for preventing abuse, taking as their points of reference the Pontifical Motu Proprio "Sacramentorum Sanctitatis Tutela" and the norms contained in Safeguarding Children: Standards and Guidance Document for the Catholic Church in Ireland, commissioned and produced by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church.

The Visitors named by the Holy Father for the dioceses are: His Eminence Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Emeritus Archbishop of Westminster, for the Archdiocese of Armagh; His Eminence Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, for the Archdiocese of Dublin; the Most Reverend Thomas Christopher Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, for the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly; the Most Reverend Terrence Thomas Prendergast, Archbishop of Ottawa, for the Archdiocese of Tuam.

INVITATION TO CONFERENCE.

This year, Viatores Christi is celebrating its 50th year of recruiting, training and placing people from all walks of life in long-term overseas missionary roles. As we reach this important milestone, we feel that it would be very timely and beneficial at this landmark in our existence to be able to bring together those in the field of mission, development and volunteering to explore where we are all going in the future and how we can continue Ireland’s long tradition of working to make the world a better, fairer place for everyone to live a more human life.

To this end, we are planning a jubilee conference on 29th and 30th October 2010 in Wynn’s Hotel, Dublin. The Conference will be entitled

Mission. .. . Development. . . Volunteering. . . What Next?

Exploring Ways Forward. . . Together!

The conference will run from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening, and will feature workshops, keynote speakers and plenary sessions as well as a social evening on the Friday night.

The conference will feature speakers from Africa, Latin America and Ireland, including:

• Patty Abozaglo, Trocaire Programme Officer for Horn/E Africa,

• Dr. Seán Ruth, author of ‘Leadership and Liberation: A Psychological Approach’

• Silas Siakor, director of the Sustainable Development Institute in Liberia

• Rev. Dr. Sahr Yambasu, Methodist minister (formerly Galway) and development specialist

• Sylvia Cachino and others

• Viatores Christi Haitian Team - Haiti Earthquake – Natural Disasters Case study: Was It Really a Natural Disaster

Talks and workshops on:

• listening to voices from the global South;

• ethics and best practice in development; leadership, liberation and the role of an ally;

• …and many other topics relevant to all those working in mission and development.

• exhibits – social evening – group discussions – practical proposals

The aim of the conference is to contribute to the advancement of thinking in mission, aid and development -- our common area of interest and concern. We wish to explore and discuss the long

tradition of Ireland’s sons and daughters who brought their lives and skills to share with those in need in our world.

We would therefore be grateful if you could see fit to assist us in any way that you can by promoting the conference to your own members and attending the conference. We are also inviting all those who are involved in the field of mission, development, volunteering, advocacy, etc., to have a stand at the conference where you may publicise the work of your own organisation/group and how we can all work collaboratively in the future.

Kids Corner with Cian and Bella.

Luke 17:11-19 • Ungrateful, Me???

Cian: Hi there Bella, Why have you got your sad face on?

Bella: In school we were reading about the flooding that happened in Pakistan during the summer and how awful it was for sooo many families. We are having a car boot sale to raise money and help out. I was just thinking that we are so ‘whingy’ in our lives, we have so much to be grateful for but we regularly forget this and sometimes don’t even think of thanking our parents and God.

Cian: Oh Man, now you have me feeling bad too! But wait, I thanked God for helping me with the Drumcondra tests last week, that was that a start?!

Bella: It sure was but you can find all your Xbox games and stuff that are in good condition that you don’t use and bring them to our car boot sale, that will be another way to say thanks, by giving and helping others in need.

How will you give thanks for your life and faith today?

 Special feature on:

Day for Life Mass to be broadcast by RTÉ 1 from Ballina, Co Mayo
The Catholic Church in Ireland will celebrate the Day for Life 2010 on this Sunday, 3 October. The theme for this year’s Day for Life is the meaning of Christian death and care for those who are dying – Lord for your faithful people, life is changed, not ended.
Speaking about this year’s theme in a special video interview Bishop Fleming, Bishop of Killala and the Bishops’ Conference Day for Life delegate said: “The Day for Life celebrates life as given to us by God. This year’s theme talks about life and gives us a very rich view of the Catholic position of life, namely that no matter how long or how short life is and no matter what conditions it is lived in, life has a value because it is given to us by God.”
Bishop Fleming’s interview is available as part of a special feature on the Catholic Bishops’ website – www.catholicbishops.ie. This special feature includes:
Video interview with Bishop John Fleming
A Pastoral Letter from the Bishops’ on this year’s Day for Life theme, which is available to download in English, Irish and Polish. This pastoral is being circulated to parishes around the country and will be available on Sunday 3 October

2.      2.  IRELAND’S CELEBRATION OF WORLD MENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2010.

Singing is good for you!
Did you know that Choral Singing is good for your Mental Health? That singing in a choir provides us with the ‘feel good factor’ and makes a positive impact on our general sense of well-being?  Choral or group singing can help to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, has been shown to increase the production of endorphins and adrenaline, gives the participant a physical workout and is an enjoyable way to meet new people and make music together.  To prove it, thousands of voices from across the island of Ireland are uniting in song next week to celebrate World Mental Health, promoting the message that, Choral Singing is good for your Mental Health!
The National Choral Singing Week runs from 3-10 October to coincide with World Mental Health Week and was established in 2008 to promote the positive mental health benefits of choral singing. Last year National Choral Singing Week was a real success, with over 105 events all over the country. This year, it is hoped to have an even greater number of events throughout Ireland.
Groups all over the country are finalizing their plans and events will take on many forms including public performances in churches, hospitals and day care units, open choral rehearsals, open sing alongs in schools, etc. Daily events will take place on campus in The University of Limerick, where The Association of Irish Choirs is based. These events include a seminar, ‘What’s therapeutic about singing?’ hosted by the Music & Health Research Group, a Laughter Workshop, a Beatbox event and a ‘Crows’ Cawrus’.
Once again, The Association of Irish Choirs and Mental Health Ireland have teamed up in driving this initiative and both organisations are supporting choirs and organisations nationally to organise an event for National Choral Singing Week. ‘This choral celebration of World Mental Health Week is a unique and powerful opportunity for the choirs and singers of Ireland to unite together in song and spread the word – that Choral Singing is good for your Mental Health!’ said Liz Powell, CEO Association of Irish Choirs.
‘We live in a society in which mental health problems are becoming more common, one in four of the general population may be susceptible to developing a mental health problem. This makes it increasingly important that people be aware of the pressures around them and take steps to nurture their mental health. Singing is one activity that has a proven ability to enhance mental health and counteract negative influences which often lead to stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health problems’, comments Ted Tierney, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mental Health Ireland.
Malcolm Green works as a psychotherapist and is conductor of Limerick Choral Union. He is organising a concert in St. John’s Cathedral, Limerick on Friday 8th October at 7.30pm involving several local choirs and hosted by Mel Mercier. ‘There has been much research carried out recently on the benefits to emotional and physical health by singing regularly in a choir. It improves concentration and keeps body and mind exercised’, according to Malcolm.
National Choral Singing Week is a joint initiative of the Association of Irish Choirs, Mental Health Ireland and Wexford County Council Arts Office. Please see www.aoic.ie or www.mentalhealthireland.ie for details of a choral event near you.

Many of us have enjoyed watching the Papal visit to the UK. The event culminated in a special ceremony in Birmingham, at which Cardinal John Henry Newman was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI.
Author Dermot Mansfield SJ, joined RTE commentator John Bowman during RTE's televised commentary of the beatification ceremony.
Mansfield has a specialised interest in the life of Cardinal Newman. In his recent book, 'Heart Speaks to Heart - The Story of Blessed John Henry Newman', featured during RTE's coverage of the Papal visit, he presents a clear and vivid account of Newman's life, of his profound faith and his extraordinary care for the truth.

Bella: Hey Cian, Did you learn about the Gospel in school this week?
Cian: We sure did Bella. It was easy to understand alright but a bit hard to put into practice, I reckon!
Bella: What you mean Ciano?
Cian: Well the apostles were just kind of asking Jesus how can they have better faith and he kind of told them that we need to keep trying hard to work at it to always keep up the effort. Not always easy y’know!
Bella: I guess that is harder to do than say Cian, but look, we both know how good it is to push hard and then see the difference in our lives. We have both seen this with sport, dance, green flags in school and lots of other things. ‘Let your faith grow’ every day Ciano, and try to be patient knowing that every little effort helps! That is what God is asking of us!
How can you ‘let your faith grow’, this week?
