Third Sunday in Lent.

Saints of the Week:

March 8th, St. John of God.

He lived from 1495 to 1550, and devoted his life to the care of the poor and the sick. He is patron of nurses, the sick, heart patients, printers and booksellers.

March 9th, St. Frances of Rome.

Frances, who died in 1440, lived a happily married life in Rome where she was especially concerned for the poor.

Saints of the Celtic Calendar:

March 8th, St.Senan.

Senan was born near Kilrush, Co. Clare. His family were prosperous farmers. His vocation seems to have resulted from an experience of danger from the sea. His early studies were mainly made at the monastery of Kilnamanagh. His principal monastic foundation was on Scattery Island, near Kilrush, in the Shannon Estuary. He was anam chara to Ciaran of Clonmacnoise and Brendan and died in 544.

March 11th, St. Aengus.

Aengus or Oengus was a monk in Clonenagh, Co. Laois, who came to the monastery of Tallaght at the end of the eighth century during the abbacy of Maelruain to spend a period under his direction. He was renowned for his devotion to both foreign and native saints and composed two martyrologies. He returned to Clonenagh, where he became abbot and bishop. He died around 830.

6. Trócaire Bulletin for the Third Sunday in Lent.

Trócaire would like to thank everyone for their huge generosity to the Haiti appeal. Donations from the Irish public have surpassed all expectations - ROI: €3,486,815 and NI: Stg £979,643. Thanks to this support Trócaire will help thousands of survivors to rebuild their lives in Haiti.

However, this Lent Trócaire reminds us that, while earthquakes and natural disasters attract global attention, there are millions of people around the world who will go to bed hungry tonight. During Lent over 600,000 children will die from hunger and diseases caused by hunger. The total number of people that were killed by the recent earthquake in Haiti, is less than half that number. This hunger crisis is taking place away from the TV cameras and global attention, in small, rural villages all over the developing world.

The Trócaire Box has been part of the Irish Lenten Experience since 1973, and they are available at the church doors. Why not find out more about the Trócaire campaign and their work at http://www.trocaire.org/ ?
