Heroic Priest of the Titanic
As we prepare for Vocations Sunday, it's good to remember the unshakable faithfulness of so many good priests. Here from lifesitenews.com is the story of Fr Thomas, Byles, a passenger on the Titanic:
The untold story of the Titanic’s Catholic priest who went down hearing confessions
by Patrick B. Craine
Fr Thomas Byles |
Amidst all the tales of chivalry from the Titanic disaster there is one that’s not often told.
It is that of Fr. Thomas Byles, the Catholic priest who gave up two spots on a lifeboat in favour of offering spiritual aid to the other victims as they all went down with the “unsinkable” vessel.
A 42-year-old English convert, Fr. Byles was on his way to New York to offer the wedding Mass for his brother William. Reports suggest that he was reciting his breviary on the upper deck when the Titanic struck the iceberg in the twilight hours of Sunday, April 14th, 1912.
According to witnesses, as the ship went down the priest helped women and children get into the lifeboats, then heard confessions, gave absolution, and led passengers in reciting the Rosary.
Agnes McCoy, one of the survivors, says that as the great ship sank, Fr. Byles “stood on the deck with Catholics, Protestants and Jews kneeling around him.”
“Father Byles was saying the rosary and praying for the repose of the souls of those about to perish,” she told the New York Telegram on April 22, 1912, according to the website devoted to his memory, FatherByles.com.
In the words of the priest’s friend Fr. Patrick McKenna, “He twice refused the offer of a place in a boat, saying his duty was to stay on the ship while one soul wanted his ministrations.”
Nearly two weeks after the disaster, The Church Progress in St. Louis, Missouri wrote this moving tribute to the heroic priest:

In almost every line that has been written, and in every sentence that has been spoken, there stands boldly out above every other expression a picture of sublime heroism that will be copied into the pages of history. And well it may, for it is deserving of that honor.
But when it is, mention should be made of one whom pens and tongues have almost forgotten in their accounts of this awful sea tragedy. Among those who safely reached the land again no one seems to have been aware of his presence on the ship, but we may hope that many who meet him in a blissful eternity will praise God that Father Thomas Byles was there to administer absolution unto them.

Happy birthday Pope Benedict XVI
Today, April 16th 2012, is Pope Benedict's 85th birthday.
Traditional prayer for the Pope:
Let us pray for Benedict, our Pope.
May the Lord preserve him, and give him life, and make
him blessed upon the earth, and deliver him not up to the
will of his enemies. [Ps 40:3]
Our Father, Hail Mary.
O God, Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful people, look
mercifully upon Thy servant Benedict, whom Thou hast chosen
as shepherd to preside over Thy Church. Grant him, we
beseech Thee, that by his word and example, he may edify
those over whom he hath charge, so that together with the
flock committed to him, may he attain everlasting life.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Divine Mercy Sunday
From the talk given by Pope Benedict XVI before the Regina Caeli prayer at Castel Gandolfo on Sunday, March 30th 2012:
'During the Jubilee of the Year 2000 the beloved Servant of God John Paul II established that throughout the Church the Sunday after Easter should be called Domenica in Albis and Divine Mercy Sunday. This occurred contemporaneously with the canonization of Faustina Kowalska, a humble Polish Sister who was born in 1905 and died in 1938, a zealous messenger of the Merciful Jesus. Indeed, mercy is the central nucleus of the Gospel message; it is the very name of God, the Face with which he revealed himself in the Old Covenant and fully in Jesus Christ, the incarnation of creative and redemptive Love. May this merciful love also shine on the face of the Church and show itself through the sacraments, in particular that of Reconciliation, and in works of charity, both communitarian and individual. May all that the Church says and does manifest the mercy God feels for man, and therefore for us. When the Church has to recall an unrecognized truth or a betrayed good, she always does so impelled by merciful love, so that men and women may have life and have it abundantly (cf. Jn 10: 10). From divine mercy, which brings peace to hearts, genuine peace flows into the world, peace between different peoples, cultures and religions.
Like Sr Faustina, John Paul II in his turn made himself an apostle of Divine Mercy. In the evening of the unforgettable Saturday, 2 April 2005, when he closed his eyes on this world, it was precisely the eve of the Second Sunday of Easter and many people noted the rare coincidence that combined the Marian dimension - the first Saturday of the month - and the dimension of Divine Mercy. This was in fact the core of John Paul II's long and multi-faceted Pontificate. The whole of his mission at the service of the truth about God and man and of peace in the world is summed up in this declaration, as he himself said in Krakow-Łagiewniki in 2002 when he inaugurated the large Shrine of Divine Mercy: "Apart from the mercy of God there is no other source of hope for mankind". John Paul II's message, like St Faustina's, thus leads back to the Face of Christ, a supreme revelation of God's mercy. Constant contemplation of this Face is the legacy he bequeathed to us which we joyfully welcome and make our own.'

Bishop Martin Drennan with some of the priests of the Diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora |
The Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Holy Thursday, April 5th 2012 at 11am in Galway Cathedral. At this Mass, the Chrism is consecrated, and the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of Catechumens are blessed by the Bishop for use in the sacraments in the year ahead.
The priests of the diocese and priests living or ministering in this diocese concelebrate this Mass with the Bishop, manifesting in a special way their communion with him. This is a very appropriate occasion to pray for our priests as they renew their priestly promises, and to pray for vocations to the priesthood.

New Backdrops for Tabernacle and Shrine
To mark the holding of the Eucharistic Congress in Ireland, Monsignor Malachy Hallinan P.P., in consultation with the Parish Pastoral Council, commissioned the artist Vicki Crowley to design and make new backdrops for the Tabernacle and the Shrine of Our Lady in Sacred Heart Church. They were installed in the Church last week.
Backdrop to Tabernacle
Description by the artist, Vicki Crowley:
'Marking the Eucharistic Congress in June 2012, seven painted canvases hang together forming the backdrop to the Tabernacle in the Sacred Heart Church, Westside, Galway.
The starting point chosen for the design was the words of Christ. "I am the bread of life," so therefore, the central focus on the main canvas is the Holy Eucharist. The white host is depicted surrounded by a radiating aura of life-giving energy and light which illuminate everything around it.
A stylized landscape runs across the three central panels. In the left panel, a woman stands as she extends her hands to receive God's grace through the Eucharist. The man in the right hand panel, who is in a similar pose, balances the design. The couple represents humankind, whereas the plants rising behind them, together with the green fields which extend across the panels, symbolise all growth on earth. The white doves that fly in the sky above indicate that God's grace is universal and as they swirl joyfully on high, their white feathers catch the golden light that emanates from the Central Host.
The lower panels depict bands of water which flow from left to right. Here we see some fish which not only represent life in the oceans and rivers, but also remind us that the early Christians used the fish as the symbol of Christianity.
All the colours used in these oil paintings are in harmonious accord and were chosen to inspire calm and prayerful meditation.'
Backdrop to the Statue of Our Lady
Description by the artist, Vicki Crowley:
'The backdrop to the statue of Our Lady in the Sacred Heart Church in Westside, Galway, has been painted to complement the backdrop to the Tabernacle on the opposite side of the main wall of the Church.
At the top of the main panel, a halo radiates golden light and brings brightness to the subject. To the left and right of the panel, sprays of flowers grow upwards, catching the halo's golden light. The lilies represent the purity of Our Lady and the white doves that fly above them symbolize peace and love.'
