'Witness Awakens Vocations' theme for Vocations Sunday 2010.

This Sunday, 25 April, is Vocations Sunday or Good Shepherd Sunday. Vocations Sunday is the day on which the Church prays for and encourages vocations.

The theme of this year's Vocation's Sunday message from Pope Benedict XVI is 'Witness Awakens Vocations'. Pope Benedict chose this theme to complement this year, the Year for Priests, which he inaugurated on 16 June last. In his Vocations Sunday message Pope Benedict prays: “May this World Day once again offer many young people a precious opportunity to reflect on their own vocation and to be faithful to it in simplicity, trust and complete openness. May the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, watch over each tiny seed of a vocation in the hearts of those whom the Lord calls to follow him more closely, may she help it to grow into a mature tree, bearing much good fruit for the Church and for all humanity.”

The full text of the Pope’s message for Vocations Sunday is available as part of a special feature on

http://www.catholicbishops.ie./

The web feature includes:
Details of vocations events and initiatives in dioceses to mark Vocations Sunday 2010

Details of the Maynooth Seminary Open Day on Vocations Sunday - see

http://www.maynoothcollege.ie/

Details of events being organized by Vocations Ireland, the association of the Vocation Directors of the Catholic Religious Orders in Ireland
Liturgical Resources

Pope Paul VI instituted the World Day of Prayer for Vocations (4th Sunday of Easter) on 11 April 1964: “O Jesus, divine Shepherd of the spirit, you have called the Apostles in order to make them fishermen of men, you still attract to you burning spirits and generous young people, in order to render them your followers and ministers to us” (Pope Paul VI launching the 1st Word Day of Prayer for Vocations).

Vocations Sunday is known as Good Shepherd Sunday and is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Easter.

Visit of the Relics of St John Vianney to Ireland from 25 to 29 April.
As part of the Year for Priests, the Bishops of Ireland have arranged for a visit of the relics of St John Vianney, Patron Saint of Parish Priests, from Sunday 25 to Thursday 29 April 2010. The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has expressed his hope that the Year for Priests will support the faithfulness and holiness of priests, and deepen their commitment to "interior renewal for the sake of a more forceful and incisive witness to the Gospel in today’s world". The Year for Priests is also an opportunity for the whole Church to seek a holier and renewed priesthood.
Each day of this special four-day visit of the relics will have a different theme. These key themes are central to both the life and mission of St John Vianney and this Year for Priests. The faithful are invited to pray at the relics in the following churches based in each of the four ecclesiastical provinces of Ireland:

Cork - Sunday, 25 April in St Francis Church, Liberty Street on the theme 'Vocations to the Priesthood'

Dublin - Monday, 26 April Church of St John Vianney in Ardlea, on the theme 'Social Outreach of the Curé of Ars'

Knock - Tuesday, 27 April in Our Lady’s Shrine, Knock, on the theme 'The Sacrament of Reconciliation'

Armagh - Wednesday, 28 April in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh, on the theme 'The Eucharist and Pastoral Leadership'. Arrival of relics for Mass at 12.30 pm. Adrama presentation will take place after Mass and this has been prepared by the children of Mount St Catherine’s Primary School Armagh. From 2.00 pm to 7.00 pm a short prayer service will take place on the hour. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available throughout this period. At 7.30 pm Mass will be celebrated and all concelebrants are welcome. The farewell ceremony for the relics will take place at 9.00 pm.

Newsletter, Third Sunday of Easter, April 18th 2010.

Saint’s of the Week.

St. Anselm from Lombardy joined the monastic school at Bec in Normandy in 1059 under the direction of Lanfranc whom he succeeded as Archbishop of Canterbury. He was exiled twice and died in 1109.

St. George was venerated as a soldier saint at Lydda in the Holy Land where he was probably martyred around the year 300. His cult may have been popularised in England and Ireland by returning crusaders. He is patron saint of England, Portugal, of soldiers, and of the Scout Movement.

St. Adalbert, born 956, after being bishop of Prague, went as a missionary among the Prussians on the Polish coast where he was martyred in 997.

St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, 1578- 1622, a Capuchin who preached to the Calvinists in Switzerland, where he was killed by a group of extremists.

10 April 2010

Newsletter, Divine Mercy Sunday, 2010.

What is Divine Mercy Sunday?

Among all of the elements of devotion to The Divine Mercy requested by our Lord through St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, the Feast of Mercy holds first place. The Lord's will with regard to its establishment was already made known in His first revelation to the saint, as recorded in her Diary. In all, there were 14 revelations concerning the desired feast.

Our Lord's explicit desire is that this feast be celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. This Sunday is designated in "The Liturgy of the Hours and the Celebration of the Eucharist" as the "Octave Day of Easter." It was officially called the Second Sunday of Easter after the liturgical reform of Vatican II. Now, by the Decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the name of this liturgical day has been changed to: "Second Sunday of Easter, or Divine Mercy Sunday."

'Now On Throughout the Church'

Pope John Paul II made the surprise announcement of this change in his homily at the canonization of St. Faustina on April 30, 2000. There, he declared: "It is important then that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout the Church, will be called ‘Divine Mercy Sunday.' "

By the words "the whole message," Pope John Paul II was referring to the connection between the "Easter Mystery of the Redemption" — in other words, the suffering, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Christ, followed by the sending of the Holy Spirit — and this Feast of Divine Mercy, the Octave Day of Easter, which fulfills the grace of atonement as lived through by Christ Jesus and offered to all who come to Him with trust.

This connection is evident from the scripture readings appointed for this Sunday. As John Paul said, citing the Responsorial Psalm of the Liturgy, "The Church sings … as if receiving from Christ's lips these words of the Psalm." "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good; His steadfast love (= mercy) endures forever" (Ps 118:1). And then, Pope John Paul II developed the connection further: "[This comes] from the lips of the risen Christ, who bears the great message of Divine Mercy and entrusts its ministry to the Apostles in the Upper Room: ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, even so I send you. … Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained" (Jn 20:21-23).

‘Christ is risen, alleluia!’ This is the ancient Christian greeting on this day of great joy and happiness for all.
